The Skills you Need to Run a Franchise

It takes a mix of skill and experience to run a franchise but you don't necessarily have to own every great skill or trait under the sun in order to run a successful business. Most business owners and franchise operators have a few of the best skills but tend to lack in other areas - that's why they surround themselves with people to support their weaknesses. With that said there are still some traits that are vital to success and they're common among most franchise and business owners:

Willingness to Sacrifice - Some of the most successful business owners are willing to give up their own mother to get ahead. That doesn't mean you need to do the same but recognizing that you have to make sacrifices and be willing to do so can take you farther. Whether it's family time on the weekends or a willingness to be the last in line for a paycheck a good business owner is always willing to sacrifice.

Strong Interpersonal Skills - While you don't work directly for a boss anymore, you still have to answer to a lot of people: employees (and their families), customers, vendors, lawyers, state officials, etc. There's a big mix of personalities in there so you need to have good interpersonal and social skills to avoid bitching critical relationships.

Strong Leadership - Most franchises will likely need a staff in order to operate. Those employees are going to need direction. A good franchise owner is able to lead and direct on a level that builds morale, inspires trust and keeps everyone satisfied. When there are challenges you should be able to lead your staff over or around those challenges.

Strong Organizational Skills - There's a lot that goes into running a business and being able to manage it all without missing a bit is a good skill to have. There's a huge benefit to being able to stay on top of things, keep your priorities straight and hit those sales deadlines.

Intelligence - There's a lot to be said for text-book knowledge but scoring well on standardized testing doesn't count. Street smarts and common sense are worth more when it comes to running and managing a business - down to settling and overcoming any kind of challenge or issue that pops up.

Experience - If you don't have experience in any given field you want to franchise in, you'll have difficult managing the day to day tasks as well as securing financing or creating a strong foundation. If you want to start a business then get experience, even if it means doing some volunteer work in a similar vertical to "pad your resume".

Optimism - People like to do business with other people. Adding on to that, people like to do business with happy people. Employees like to work for happy employers. When things go sour, you need to be able to stay optimistic and ensure everyone (Vendors, employees, customers, etc.) that everything is just fine. Work through the smut and enjoy the glory of success.

Every one of these traits and qualities is important to making sure that your business and franchise stays open with a positive increase in sales. Not every owner of every franchise will display these qualities but leveraging what you have and growing others will only make you more successful once you launch your franchise.
