Effective Operational Practices for Managing Diversity

The continuous increase in the diversity with the passage of time has led to the formation and application of several policies and techniques in order to get the most benefit and productivity through diverse employees in an organization. These policies not only help the diverse employees getting better along with each other but also create high possibilities of promotions.

According to the 1998 Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Task Force, if the following diversity policies and programs are applied throughout every organization, maximum continuous success will be possible. These policies are as follows;

* There should be a specific office, committee and officer that deal with the diversity aspect of the organization. The job of such a committee or officer would be to deal effectively with all the diverse issues and problems within the organization.

* Through various sources, recruit and hire highly qualified diverse individuals. Invite them personally to apply for your organization.

* Form personnel policies in accordance to the needs of the diverse masses. Specific policies regarding cafeteria-meals, personal days, etc should be in accordance to each specific diverse population. A more content working body will yield more efficient performance.

* Incase a dispute may arise; the diverse office should have certain resolution mechanisms. The dispute should be resolved in an unbiased manner. First of all, the problem should be attempted to be solve through face to face dialogue between the disputing parties. If that does not solve the problem, a supervisor or a diverse officer can act as an arbitrator. If that fails as well, the problem can be presented to a Peer Review Panel to come out with the solution.

* In order to maintain diverse workers, they must be given equal and fair chances of promotions amongst other workers within the organization. Techniques such as training, challenging assignments, complete and thorough performance appraisals, job counseling all lead towards promotions. These should be thoroughly applied on the diverse populations in order to increase the chances of retention.

* Aware and educate all the employees that respect for diverse colleagues and customers is highly important. Design a performance appraisal scale that measures attitudes and behaviors towards the diverse workers.

* While terminating and down sizing employees, the organization should ensure that it is on the basis of work requirements and previous performance. If an organization downsizes its employees on the basis of seniority, then the newer and the diverse employees will be the first to go. This will waste all the efforts put in order to increase diversity.

If these techniques and policies are successfully applied to organizations throughout, there will be an effective and industrious management of the diverse masses. These effective and easy to carry out operational practices not only allow the diverse masses better chances of lifestyle but also prove to be very fruitful and productive for the organization. The techniques may require a lot of effort and time to be successful but they are most certainly possible.
